Working Mom Vs. Staying At Home Mom

Before deciding to stay at home with my two kids this March, I was an elementary special education teacher for seven years. I was a working mom for the first year and a half of my daughter's life, so I have a little experience as both a working and stay at home mom. So far, based on my own experiences, being a stay at home mom has been the most challenging job I have ever had. Every day I am exhausted, physically and mentally. It is amazing how two little humans can take so much out of you. There are many unique challenges to being a working mom as well. All in all, even though I am constantly challenged by my crew and exhausted every day, all day, I would still choose to stay at home. I love staying home with my babies and would be devastated if I had to go back to work right now. I am lucky I get to spend this special time with my two crazy kids.

Here are my pros and cons of being a working and stay at home mom.

The Working Mom

Pros:
- You have a social life. You get to see and talk to other adults every day! You have adult conversations that do not revolve around potty training and feeding and your child's behavior. You get to go to happy hours and adult parties.

- You have a sort of balance in your life. Your life does not 100% revolve around your kids and their needs.

- Your kids go to daycare. Your daycare provider takes a lot of responsibility for things like potty training, discipline, nap schedules, and feeding meals. You just have to maintain this structure over the weekend.

- It is fulfilling. You feel like you are contributing financially to the family (even if it may not be the case with the cost of daycare). You feel like you are making use of the tens of thousands of dollars you spent on your undergrad and graduate degrees. You get to continue doing what you enjoy.

- Your kids learn how to socialize in a group setting. They will be exposed to language from other kids. They will learn how to share and play with others. They will learn how to walk and talk and play from watching older kids.

Cons:
- You are so busy. Life goes by in a BLUR. One day you look up and your kid is one years old and you have no idea how it went by so fast.

- Your child has to go to daycare. Daycare is expensive. Daycare can be scary. You never really know what goes on during the day. Your infant will not be able to tell you if they are left crying all day. They will not be able to tell you if they are played with or read to. They will not be able to tell you if the daycare provider leaves them unattended or watching tv all day. They cannot tell you how long they sat in a poopy diaper. Toddlers cannot tell you if the daycare provider or other kids are mean and yell at them. They will not be able to tell you if they get enough food or if they are hungry all day. Sending your child to daycare will always be a huge risk, no matter how much research you do.

- You miss so many milestones. Often it is the daycare provider who sees the first steps and hears the first words. By the time you pick them up at the end of the day, you feed them dinner and put them to bed. You will feel like a bystander who gets told how often and what they ate, what their favorite toys are, how long they nap, and when they roll over and crawl.

- Your child will cause you to use up all of your sick days on him/her, especially if they are in daycare. All winter kids have bad colds, the flu, stomach bugs, ear infections, or just feel plain lousy. We never felt comfortable sending our baby to daycare when they were not feeling well. All they want is to spend the day snuggling with mommy or daddy.

- Sure, you have balance in your life. But, it takes a lot of work to create and maintain this balance. As a teacher, I was used to staying late at school whenever I wanted (which was a lot of the time). As a mom, you cannot do this or you will never see your child. You cannot pour your heart and soul into your job or you will have nothing left for your baby when you get home. It got to the point when I could not race out of school fast enough just so I could have some time with my little girl. It is hard to maintain the balance of working and being a mom. You cannot give 100% to either. When you are at work, you are thinking of your kid. When you are home, you are thinking of what you need to do for your job or what you did not get done because you had to rush home early. Not to mention you also have to make time for cleaning, making dinner, and spending time with the husband. Oh, and sure you are able to go to parties and happy hours with co-workers. But it is hard justifying spending the night doing these when you are away from the baby all day! It is a constant battle to do it all and you constantly feel like you are never giving enough in each area of your life.

The Stay at Home Mom

Pros:
- You get to be with your kids every day. You are there to witness every milestone, every funny thing they say. You will know your child better than anyone. You can predict every move they make. You speak their language. You understand their mannerisms. You are the one who sees them start to crawl. You see your kids start to play with each other. You are there to give them kisses when they fall. You are there to support them in their struggles and you are there to celebrate their accomplishments. You are your child's everything.

- You have flexibility every day. If the babies want to sleep in, go for it. If you want to spend the morning watching cartoons, awesome. You are free to lounge in yoga pants or let the kids run around in a diaper all day. You pick the activities to do every day. And there is no pressure if you are having an off day.

- When your kid is sick, you cancel any plans and stay in the house. You snuggle in bed and watch tv. You do not have to call in sick or find a sub or write sub plans. Your only responsibility is to take care of your sick baby.

- You are in control of everything. You control how and when you potty train. You are in charge of what they eat. You control how your child is disciplined. You make your child's schedule- when they eat, play, and sleep. You decide what and how they learn.

Cons:
- You are with your kids every day. All day. 24 hours a day. 7 days a week. Your kids are your life. Your entire life. You forget how to socialize without bringing up your kids because that is all you know. Your life becomes a never-ending story of potty training and solid feeding and teething and tantrums. Going to the grocery store alone becomes the highlight of your week.

- You are so busy. Life goes by in a BLUR. One day you look up and your second child is already 6 months but you could swear you just left the hospital days ago.

- Your days become monotonous. Your children thrive on routine. Any change or special activity could throw them off for days. You wonder how long you can continue to do the exact same thing day after day after day after day....

- When you are sick, the show must go on. Your husband is not going to take a sick day to take care of the kids while you lay on the couch to get better. You have to suck it up, throw on a movie, and hope you can stay awake enough that you notice if one of them is getting into something they shouldn't.

- Cleaning the house and other "housewife" chores seem impossible. When you stay at home, you put pressure on yourself. If I am home, I should be able to have the house spotless, kids dressed and clean, and dinner cooked every day. this is impossible, especially when you have an infant. Between feeding them, changing diapers, putting down for naps, engaging in a little playtime, feeding again, more diaper changes, more naps, going on playdates.... you barely have time to breathe let alone cook or clean. The rare days two kids are napping at the same time, I am so exhausted I need to spend those 20 minutes vegging out or sleeping before the chaos starts again. This does not stop you from thinking you are a failure because the house is a wreck and ten minutes before you need to eat you still have no idea what to make.

Products We Love: Baby Edition

I decided to make a list of some of the products out there that we love! Some items we got lucky with our initial choice... others it took a couple tries before we got it right! Enjoy!

(All links and photos are from Amazon.com)

Car Seats:

Infant Seat: Chicco KeyFit 30  - Cannot go wrong with this car seat. It is easy to install, easy to tote around, and fits using an attachment with many strollers. Raegan was even able to use this car seat up until Rory was born (17 months) as a back-up car seat in Chris' car.

Convertible: Britax Marathon - We love the Britax convertible car seats. We have the Marathon in my car and the Boulevard in the other. Once Rory is out of the infant seat, both Britax seats will be in my car. The Britax is easy to install and transfer between cars. Raegan started using this car seat about 10 months (maybe earlier). She is small for her age so Rory will probably make the switch in the next couple months. This seat can go forward or rear facing.

Strollers

Single: Bob Revolution - I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Bob. I am actually so sad to get rid of it even though realistically there will never be a reason for me to need a single jogging stroller. I love that is has the car seat attachment for the Chicco car sear. It is sturdy, well-made, and just an over-all wonderful stroller. Raegan was able to sit in it without the car seat as soon as she could hold her head up nicely and has always loved riding in this stroller. The downside to any jogging stroller is that it takes up a ton of room. Because we do not have a garage, we always kept the stroller in the back of my car.

Umbrella Stroller: Chicco Liteway  - When I was registering for gifts, no one told me how handy umbrella strollers were. They are the most convenient, and in our case, most used stroller. If you are limited for trunk room, get a awesome umbrella stroller for use in places like the mall and other areas where there might be a tight fit. One thing we learned quick- it SUCKS having a stroller everywhere you go. You suddenly have to find elevators instead of using the stairs and you realize how many places are not built for toting kids through. Currently, I keep the umbrella stroller in my car because it takes almost no room. When carting the two about, I either have Raegan in the stroller and Rory in the carrier or Raegan will walk while Rory goes in the stroller. When I used the single Bob, I had both strollers in the car and used whichever was more convenient for the situation: Bob for outside, walks, and open areas and Chicco for small places like the mall.

Double: Bob Double  I have had the most issues finding a perfect double stroller. We started with the Contours. This was just a monster. I felt like I was pushing a semi-truck. Then we got a Phil and Teds double. This one was okay. We got it because it is basically the size of a single. However, it was not as great of quality as the Bob- one trip to Disney and it was basically falling apart. Also, it was more of a pain. It was not as easy as just taking it out of the car and unfolding it. In order to use the double seat, you had to attach it separately. It only took a minute or so, but a pain none-the-less. Finally, we got the Bob Double, which is AWESOME. It is a monster with no place to go, but awesome anyway. I have been taking them on long walks with the dogs and even do a good bit of running with the stroller. It is light weight and both kids love riding in it. Again, if we had a garage that we could just store it in, it would be 100% the perfect stroller. I am still thinking of getting a lightweight double stroller for trips to the zoo or Disney, where I do not want to bring a huge stroller but would need two seats.

High Chair

Graco 4 in 1
: This high chair is great, especially because we are currently using it with both kids! It starts as a regular high chair that raises to different heights. It also converts to a travel or space-saving high-chair. Lastly, it becomes a toddler booster seat. Currently, Rory is in the high chair and Raegan is in the booster seat. So we only had to buy one high chair and both kids can utilize it at the same time!

Diaper Bag

I have two Ju Ju Be diaper bags and love them both. I started out with a Be Hip. This one is great as a take-anywhere bag. I have been using it since Raegan was an infant and it is still in great shape. It is durable and has great pockets. Also, it is the perfect size to just take the essentials without lugging around a huge bag. One thing I have learned as a parent, less is more. Even though I am paranoid about being overly prepared, I cannot stand to have a bunch of stuff with me that I do not need. When I got pregnant with Rory, I was nervous about the diaper bag situation. Both will be in diapers, plus I will need bottles, snacks, sippy cups, extra clothes, and the list goes on. I really, really, reallllllly did not want to carry all that around everywhere. I got the B.F.F. diaper bag to carry the endless amount of crap the two of them need. However, I learned early on to keep the giant bag in the car for emergencies and keep the small diaper bag with me with the most important items. This seems to be working out perfectly for now. Now that Rory is getting older and Raegan will soon be out of diapers,  I would like to pretty soon downgrade to a smaller, backpack style. I will start to look into those soon.

Carrier

Another of one of my most used items is my Ergobaby Carrier. I used it a ton with Raegan, but stopped pretty early on because I really did not need her in there. With two babies, Rory goes into the carrier at the grocery store, at the zoo, at the airport, at the playground, at Gymboree, on walks... the list goes on. It is a life-saver. This carrier is comfy, easy and quick to use, and unlike many carriers, designed to benefit baby and mommy. We have also used the BabyBjorn and the Moby but the Ergo is by far my favorite.

Gear

Boppy Lounger : This is the gift of choice when anyone asks me what they should get someone for a baby shower gift. This item allows your newborn to sleep anywhere in the house. Newborns have so many gigantic items to sleep or play in- the swing, the bouncer, the playmat. The lounger is the easiest to take wherever you want to be and super comfy for baby. It is the perfect shape for babies to cuddle up in. We used it mostly at dinner time- Raegan and Rory would sit right on the table in the lounger while we ate. We didn't like putting them on the other side of the room while the rest of us ate and they were too young for the high chair. Side note: Rory was a roller from the start so we were not really able to use it for very long for him. With Raegan, we used the Boppy lounger for months- she actually slept in it in between us in the bed for the longest time. We now use it as a seat for her to read in!

ExerSaucer : Both my kids LOVE the exersaucer. They both started using it at around 4 months. Rory is taller and from the start had a blast with all the lights, noises, and colors. Raegan needed more support for a month or so before she really got the hang of it. The noises can be annoying for parents, but it is worth it when you have a place for your child to hang out while you do a quick chore or make dinner. Rory especially loves practicing standing so our exersaucer has gotten a ton of use with him!

Go-pod : We bought this for traveling, for use in the backyard, and to use at the beach. We have only had this for use with Rory- I do not think it would have gotten as much use with Raegan, mainly because we use it as a place for Rory to stand in while we are chasing after Raegan. It is great because it is like the exersaucer, but more portable. We like that it has places to attach toys, that it has drink holders, and that there is a mat on the floor to protect their feet.

Arms Reach Mini Co-Sleeper: This is another item that we had for Rory and not Raegan. For the first couple months when Rory slept in our room, the co-sleeper was amazing. It attaches right to the side of the bed, which is super convenient for nursing in the middle of the night and for soothing the baby to sleep. It is nice because it is small enough to fit right next to bed, unlike pack and plays and many bassinets. I do not know if it is because of the co-sleeper or just Rory's personality, but unlike Raegan, he has never had to sleep in the bed with us and his transition to the crib was effortless.

Other Must-Haves

Boogie Wipes: People gave us tube after tube of diaper cream. We have barely used any of it. I wish I would have known to register for boogie wipes instead. Babies and toddlers HATE to have their nose wiped. Raegan had a runny nose basically from October to March of last year. Using tissues and regular wipes always left her nose dry and red, which only made it worse for the next wiping. Boogie wipes are great for her never-ending colds. The saline is gentle on her nose and it does not leave as much of a rash as regular tissues.

Boon Spoons : We found these spoons once we started feeding Raegan solids. The baby food pouches are great for when you are out and about. These spoons make feeding on the go a breeze!
